The YDP program has ninth, tenth and eleventh graders enrolled and will add only enroll ninth graders each year moving forward. Students receive daily academic support including PSAT Prep, CAPT Prep, and subject tutoring. Participants who have strong academic performances earn the opportunity for a paid internship or job placement. Two days per week is spent in the classroom and three days is spent in a paid internship or job. Students who have not earned strong academic performance are expected to participate in the program for four days per week. Enrichment programs include: Cartooning, Improvisation, Cooking, Art, Photography in collaboration with NicaPhoto (Nicaragua), Dancing, Videography, Financial Literacy, Cultural and Educational trips, Self-esteem Groups, and Adventure Based Counseling.
This program has a strong technology and science component. Certified Teachers from Norwalk High School coordinates the program and teachers offer project based learning opportunities. There is a focus on global awareness and students work collaborative with an advocate for student in Nagarote, Nicaragua. Last year a group of students spent eight days in Nicaragua working alongside their peers on two community projects (Garden and a Mural). Students photography projects will help build homes in Nagarote.
