THE OPEN DOOR SHELTER

Description

The Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Inc. dba The Open Door Shelter (ODS) operates on premises the Manna House soup kitchen, where three nutritious meals daily are served to the homeless and working poor; and a Food Pantry, where meals are supplied to individuals and families in need. In addition, the Shelter has a Case Management Services Program, where counseling, crisis intervention, referrals to community support services including treatment, and access to shower and laundry facilities are readily available for Shelter clients. ODS\' Outreach Program takes its Transitional Coaches into the community with current residents of the Shelter to locate and encourage homeless individuals living on the streets to come into the Shelter for services. We employ a Housing Coordinator who assists families that are homeless or living in unsuitable conditions to secure and maintain affordable and appropriate housing. The Shelter provides clothing free of charge through its "Once and Again" clothing room. The donated furniture and clothing are given to needy residents in the community and homeless individuals and families in the Greater Norwalk area. ODS\' Transitional Housing Program allows individuals a more independent living arrangement to prepare them for re-entry into the community, and its Permanent Housing Program makes affordable housing available to seven homeless adults with special needs. These individuals also receive supportive services to help them maintain housing and improve their quality of living. We recently put into operation a job training program called ìHope Works.î The objective of which is to prepare residents of the Shelter for a career. We provide participants with intense on-the-job training, academic classroom learning experiences and an array of supports including peer, professional, vocational, and post-placement services. Through Hope Works, homeless individuals acquire the skills necessary to obtain full-time employment and are given the opportunity to move toward full independence.
