Family & Children’s Agency seeks to improve the lives of Norwalk’s middle school youth by enabling their successful transition into high school and increasing their ability to be productive, independent young adults.
This is accomplished by providing a safe and structured community-based After School Program for students to improve academic performance, develop character, and promote healthy peer interactions and lifestyles.
The program meets weekdays from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Students are expected to attend all five days per week throughout the school year. The program operates on the school calendar and does not offer programs during holidays and vacations. A small summer program is offer for a select group of students.
The program is in partnership with Norwalk Community College and located on their campus. Students are transported by vans from their respective middle school to the NCC campus each day.
Students have snack and social time upon arrival followed by a minimum period of 45 minutes of academic work. This includes homework assistance and independent learning. Staff and volunteer tutors are available for assistance with academics. The second half of the program day consists of character development and enrichment activities (culinary classes, various arts classes, recreation, knitting, juggling, acting/improvisation, animal science, etc.).
On Fridays the program is divided by gender for leadership and life skills programming. The gender based groups – Girls’ Challenge and Boys’ Council – have guided discussions, guest speakers, peer/team building activities, community service projects, field trips, and more.
